A tribute to Yasmeen Al-Maimani

What a bodacious achievement it is by the 20-year old Captain Yasmeen Muhammad Yusuf Al-Maimani.She has become the second Saudi female pilot after Hanadi Zakaria Al-Hindi.It really is a great honor for the young girl and her family to have become a cause of pride for her country. It was very recent when I met her father who expressed his delight while mentioning about his daughter’s achievement. At that time Yasmeen was not authorised to fly a commercial plane.

I read her interview in Saudi Gazette weekly magazine. She seems to possess a  sublime personality.Noble in character and more importantly paying due respect to the support of her parents and also accrediting them for what they have done to fulfill her dream.”Dreams are not what you see when you sleep. They are the things that do not let you sleep”,it is a quote by the former Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam that inspired her the most. She has rightly met the standard set by Al-Hindi.I found some similarity in the life of these two personalities. Both of them had full support of their parents.Al-Hindi being born and brought up in Makkah studied in Umm Al-Qura University.Later, she was also sent to Jordan to furnish her ambition. His Highness Prince Waleed bin Talal awarded a scholarship to Al-Hindi.

Whats also common is the fact that both the individuals showed great tenacity and were resolute in their decision irrespective of the opinion of naysayers for they had a manifest view of their careers. That is why they say that ‘Knowing your destination is half the journey’.However,it may seem ironical that in a country where women are not allowed to drive a car, they are permitted to pilot an aeroplane. But,personally I feel these are two different issues.Driving a car is totally different and has no relevance with the subject here.

I pray and wish that Allah gives her ample of success in the years to come and may she become an inspiration for the rest of her nation.

  1. A tremendous achievement at the age of 20. You have become the inspiration and role model for many more girls who dream to make it big. Keep going and sky is the only limit for you.
